Why the stump is a separate line
Tree removal takes the trunk and the canopy. The stump is still in the ground. Some people want it left as a seat or a planter. Most people want to mow. Grinding is the usual answer in town because digging a whole root plate wrecks more lawn than the mill does.
We quote grinding separately on purpose. You can take the tree down in March and grind in April if the budget splits that way.
What a typical Lawrence or Topeka job looks like

How deep do you grind a stump?
Below grade, usually four to six inches, enough to mow over or to set sod. Deeper grind for a patio or a new planting hole is a different quote because it takes more time and leaves a bigger void.
Do the chips stay or leave?
Your call. Chips make decent fill in the hole. They are a poor topdressing if you want grass soon, because they steal nitrogen while they break down. Hauling them is a separate line so you can keep them if you want.
