Jefferson County tree service questions

What do you cover in Jefferson County?

Perry and the Perry Lake properties, about twenty-five minutes north of Lawrence, plus rural timber north of the Kansas River. Most calls here are lake lot work, access-limited removals, and storm cleanup on rural drives.

How does the burn permit process work?

Two steps. Get an annual permit from your local fire district chief, then call the county Central Burn Line on the day you intend to burn, since permission is only issued for that day. Have the address, burn type, responsible person, and an emergency contact ready when you call.

Why does the access road matter so much on lake property?

Because it determines the equipment, and the equipment determines the cost. A drive that a chip truck can reach and turn around on makes a job routine. A narrow drive with no turnaround on a slope above the structure pushes the same tree into climbing and rigging, or into a crane pick from wherever the crane can legally sit.

What should I do before winter?

Get deadwood out of the crowns near structures and drives, and reduce limbs that have extended past what their attachments can carry. Ice accumulates on surface area, so the long twiggy limbs collect the most weight at the end of the longest lever. Doing that work in fall is the cheapest insurance available on a lake lot.

Is emerald ash borer here?

Yes, confirmed in Jefferson County since 2015. An ash with a full crown and no dieback can be treated on a repeating schedule. An ash thinning at the top is a removal, and on a slope above a cabin it is a removal worth doing while the wood is still sound enough to climb.

Do you cover all of Jefferson County?

Yes. We work Perry and the ground between them. If your address is rural and not near any of those, call and we will tell you straight away whether it is in range.

What trees are we dealing with in Jefferson County?

Mostly Bur oak, Hackberry, Eastern redcedar, and cottonwood. Perry Lake properties have timber right up against the structures, and the access road usually decides the equipment. The equipment then decides the price, which is why we walk these before quoting rather than guessing from a photo.

How fast can you reach Jefferson County in an emergency?

We work Monday to Friday. After a widespread wind or ice event every crew in the region books up within a day, so we move storm work ahead of scheduled jobs and triage by hazard, taking trees on structures and blocked access first. Call and we will tell you where you actually land in the queue.

Is the estimate free?

Yes, and you do not need to be home. We walk the property, take measurements, and send the written quote the same day.

What happens next

Three steps, and the first one takes 45 seconds

No sales visit, no pressure, and a written number before anyone touches a saw.

  1. Front of a residential property with mature landscaping 1

    Tell us about the tree

Three questions, about 45 seconds. Or call and skip the form. Lawrence and Topeka use the same form.

  2. Aerial view of a home surrounded by mature trees 2

    We come look at it

We walk the property, check access, and write the quote on site. Free, and you do not need to be home. Tree removal, tree trimming, and stump grinding all get quoted that way.

  3. A Kansas home with established trees and lawn 3

We do the work and clean up

Crew arrives in the window we quoted. Chips, limbs, and debris leave with us unless you want them kept. Storm jobs follow emergency tree removal first, then cleanup.

In a hurry? Call (785) 371-4859 and skip all three.

Burning here takes two approvals, not one

Jefferson County requires permits for all open burning under a countywide resolution, and the process runs in two steps that catch people out. First you obtain an annual permit from your local fire district chief. Then, separately, you call the county's Central Burn Line on the day you plan to burn, because permission is granted only for that specific day. You give the address, the type of burn, the responsible person, and an emergency contact.

Neighboring districts will honor a written permit, but you still have to reach an authorized person in your own district before lighting anything. On clearing jobs of any size the arithmetic usually favors mulching, since a mulcher turns the material into ground cover in one pass and no part of the sequence depends on the wind that day.

  • Annual permit from your local fire district chief
  • Day-of call to the county Central Burn Line for each burn
  • Permission is granted only for the day it is requested
  • Written permits are honored across districts, but local contact is still required

Perry Lake sets the terms for most of the work

Perry Lake is a Corps of Engineers reservoir on the Delaware River, its dam completed in 1966 to control flooding on the Delaware and the Kansas. Around eleven thousand surface acres and more than 160 miles of shoreline make it the third largest lake in Kansas, and Perry State Park occupies forested rolling hills along the southwest side.

Lake properties concentrate every difficult variable in one place. Timber grows right up to the structures, lots sit on slope, and the access road was built for passenger vehicles rather than for a chip truck with a trailer. Which road exists determines whether a job is a climb, a crane pick, or a straightforward fell, and that determination sets the price more than the size of the tree does. We walk these before quoting.

Ice is the recurring hazard north of the Kaw

The January 2002 ice storm accumulated enough weight across eastern Kansas to collapse the roof of a marina at Lake Perry, damaging or destroying nineteen boats. In December 2007 another statewide ice event produced the costliest electrical infrastructure damage in Kansas history. Ice loads limbs according to surface area rather than strength, so the trees that fail first are the twiggiest and the weakest wooded.

That makes ice damage the most preventable kind of storm damage we deal with. Taking accumulated deadwood out of a crown and reducing limbs that have grown out past what their attachments can support lowers both the ice-catching surface and the lever arm that weight acts on. It is fall work, done on a schedule, at a fraction of what an emergency call costs in January. Emerald ash borer has been confirmed in this county since 2015, so ash gets looked at during the same visit.
