Old West Lawrence and the blocks around the university carry some of the oldest street trees in Douglas County, which means big silver maples and pin oaks growing within a few feet of century-old foundations and overhead service lines. Access is the constraint on most of these jobs, not the tree.

Eudora sits in the Kaw river bottom, so cottonwood and sycamore grow fast and get big. Wet ground also means root plates let go in saturated soil before the trunk ever fails.

Older oaks around the Baker campus and the surrounding blocks are worth preserving, and usually can be. Most calls here start as removals and end as crown reductions once someone actually looks at the tree.

River bluff properties along the Kaw with mature hardwoods on slopes. Steep access is common, which is what decides whether a job needs a crane or a climber.

Topeka neighborhoods west of Gage and out toward Auburndale are heavy with silver maple and Siberian elm planted in the postwar years. Both are fast growers with weak branch unions, and both are the trees most likely to drop a limb in a June thunderstorm.
