Seven feet over the sidewalk, fourteen over the street
Eudora keeps its tree rules in the general street regulations rather than in a separate trees article, which is where people go looking and do not find them. The clearance numbers are specific: branches may not hang lower than seven feet over a sidewalk, or lower than fourteen feet over the traveled portion of a street or alley. Seven feet is lower than most towns around here set it, and it is easy to violate with a single low silver maple limb over a corner walk.
The same section declares a nuisance out of dead trees and dead limbs, whether they stand on private property or in the parking strip, when they are close enough to fall on an alley, a sidewalk, or a power line. Two rivers, and the ground they left
Eudora sits where the Wakarusa comes into the Kansas River, on alluvial ground that grows cottonwood and sycamore faster than almost anything else in Douglas County. Fast growth is the whole problem. The 2019 tornado passed just west of town
On May 28, 2019, the tornado that eventually reached EF4 near Linwood was rated EF3 as it crossed the ground between Lawrence and Eudora, then crossed the Kansas River north of here.
